Well, well, well.
I will admit, I wrote this post later than planned. I was possibly going to do an Oscars post showing the results for this year, but it was my Wizard of Oz play, and then another rehearsal (I’m shadowing the director for the play The Secret Garden), and then my Mom’s birthday, and just a couple of days ago I got SICK!
It’s either a really bad cold or the flu, but it’s hard to tell which one. What the heck is the difference between the two, even? I just looked it up: the flu’s features are usually more intense than just a common cold. Aha! I found a graph of the symptoms of both. Ooh. Aah. Incredible! Okay, I definitely have the flu.
Oh, well. I have quite a bit of energy, though, so I’m getting better. Anyway, let’s get into movie and box office news. There’s really nothing much more to know about after my last post, but How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is dominating at the box office, however Tyler Perry’s so-bad-it’s-good A Madea Family Funeral is close behind at second place. The Hidden World has flown away with $30.1 million, while Perry’s un-masterpiece (which, not to mention, has 14% on Rotten Tomatoes) has grabbed $27.1 million. In third and fourth place are Alita: Battle Angel with $7.3 million and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part with $6.7 million, respectively, while The Rock’s Fighting with My Family is dragging behind in fifth place with $4.8 million. And, finally, after winning Best Picture (which we’ll address later), Green Book had a boost at the box office for a while, but it’s settling down now. So there’s the movie news concerning guacamole! Get it? Guacamole as in green, and green as in money? Yeah, bad joke.
You gotta be kidding me! Two thumbs down in one post? I think I’m cursed!
Moving on, let’s talk about movie trailers. About two and a half weeks ago, the second trailer for Pokémon Detective Pikachu came out, and it looks awesome! I know absolutely nothing about anything concerning
Pokémon, but this looks pretty funny. If you have Ryan Reynolds playing a small Pikachu detective trying to solve a cold case, you have a good movie. The director and co-writer Rob Letterman has directed a few kid-friendly films, and as for the other writers, Nicole Perlman co-wrote Guardians of the Galaxy with James Gunn, and was on the storyboard for Captain Marvel, and Derek Connolly co-wrote the two Jurassic World films, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, and Star Wars: Episode IX. However, Justice Smith is the main character (besides Pikachu), and he is a very bad actor. He was nominated for a Razzie this year for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and in the trailers for this, he doesn’t look super good at all. I would be absolutely sold on this if Smith wasn’t included, but with him in it . . . we’ll see what happens. Anyway, the first full trailer for Shazam! also released ten days ago. There was a teaser trailer that released last July in 2018, but we haven’t had a trailer since, so this delivered! The trailer showed more footage of Doctor Sivana, action shots, and the priceless humor. In fact, the first reviews came in for the film the other day, and it sounds like it’s the DCEU’s best installment yet. It looks like the DCEU is rebooting. Speaking of, James Gunn’s Suicide Squad reboot (yes, reboot, not sequel) has added Idris Elba and several new superheroes to it. The DCEU should just pretend like all of their other movies except Man of Steel, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman didn’t happen. Then that would really be rebooting!
Okay, now I want to get into the main section of this post: Captain Marvel. One of the most anticipated films of 2019. Technically, the second most anticipated film of 2019, at least according to Fandango. It was my forth most anticipated film, so I was really looking forward to it. Here’s a list of my most anticipated 2019 films:
- Star Wars: Episode IX
- Avengers: Endgame
- The Lion King
- Captain Marvel
- Toy Story 4
- Spider-Man: Far From Home
- Shazam!
- IT: Chapter Two
- Aladdin
- Frozen II
- Joker
- Pokémon: Detective Pikachu
- Dark Phoenix
- The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part
- How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Child’s Play
- The Secret Life of Pets 2
- Dumbo
- Glass
I think that 2019 is the most anticipated year for movies . . . ever. It has multiple films that raise every expectation, and it’s a big year for Star Wars (Episode IX, the Clone Wars TV reboot, and the TV show The Mandalorian) and Marvel (Captain Marvel, Endgame, and Far From Home), the two biggest franchises. Plus, there are three live-action Disney remakes (Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, and the new Disney streaming service Disney+’s Lady and the Tramp), and some great horror movies (IT: Chapter Two, Child’s Play, US, The New Mutants, Pet Sematary, and Annabelle 3). Comment down below and tell me what your most anticipated 2019 films are!
Where should we start off with the first female-led MCU film? How about reviews? There’s a lot of controversy over reviews because trolls have been hacking into Rotten Tomatoes and changing the audience scores. There was a lot about it a couple weeks ago when they started putting in false early reviews, and now they’ve done it again.
The audience score has been raised up to 62%, so I guess that some of the trolls have been eliminated. Actually, we should call the trolls Skrulls, in this case. Skrulls are creatures from Captain Marvel that can shape-shift and disguise themselves as humans, like the old lady that Captain Marvel punches in the trailer.
Okay, back to reviews. It has been confirmed that IMDb is also being trolled as well. A couple days ago, it was only a 6.6/10, which is irregular for a Marvel film, and now it’s still only a 7/10. The Metacritic score is also rather low at 64. I’m not sure if that has been hacked, too, but it’s low anyway. Here’s some other reviews that aren’t “Skrulled.” 😉

Those are some of the reviews I found, and from them, it sounds like Captain Marvel is pretty good. It’s definitely not the huge phenomenon that Black Panther was, but it sounds like an entertaining MCU film that has a lot of connections to Avengers: Endgame. Apparently, the post-credits scenes are supposed to really tie the two together. I haven’t looked at the spoilers because I want to see it in the theater, so there’s no spoiler alert this time!
Now, let’s move onto the cast and crew.
- Directors = Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck
- Screenplay = Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet
- Story = Nicole Perlman, Meg LeFauve, Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, Geneva Robertson-Dworet
- Composer = Pinar Toprak
- Producer = Kevin Feige
- Executive Producers = Stan Lee, Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito, Jonathan Schwartz, and Patricia Whitcher
- Associate Producer = Mary Livanos
- Co-Producer = Lars P. Winther
- Head of Photography = Ben Davis
- Costume Design = Sanja Milkovic Hays
- Film Editing = Debbie Berman and Elliot Graham
- Production Design = Andy Nicholson
- Set Decoration = Lauri Gaffin
- Casting = Sarah Finn
There’s the crew, now moving onto the excellent cast.
- Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel/Vers
- Samuel L. Jackson as Agent Nick Fury
- Ben Mendelsohn as Talos
- Jude Law as *spoiler alert!*
- Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau
- Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson
- Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser
- Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva
- Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer
- Annette Bening as Supreme Intelligence
- Rune Temte as Bron-Char
- Algenis Perez Soto as Att-Lass
And there’s the cast. The cast of main characters for this film is smaller than most MCU films, which is actually kind of good, because Marvel doesn’t have enough room to fit any more new characters in, and with Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home coming out . . . it’s only a matter of time. 😉
The scene-stealers for me in the cast are the main characters. Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Jude Law are all very good actors. Larson won Best Actress at the Oscars, Golden Globes, and BAFTAs in 2016 for her role in 2015’s Room. Samuel L. Jackson is, well . . . . Samuel L. Jackson. Ben Mendelsohn has had a rise of stardom, starting with a cameo in The Dark Knight Rises and working his way up to be the lead villain in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. And finally, Jude Law is well known for his many romantic comedies, his two Oscar nominations for Cold Mountain and The Talented Mr. Ripley, and probably most for recently playing Albus Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. So, yeah, the casting is pretty good. Other cast members include Clark Gregg, returning to play Phil Coulson in the ’90s. Apparently he, like Samuel L. Jackson, is getting de-aged so as to look like he did in the ’90s. Four-time-Oscar-nominated Annette Bening also has a role in this as seen in the trailer, and Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou return as Ronan and Korath, respectively, from Guardians of the Galaxy. There are some other newcomers as well; Lashana Lynch is Maria Rambeau, Carol Danvers’ beet friend in the Air Force before she became Captain Marvel; Gemma Chan is Minn-Erva, a member of the Starforce who is jealous of Captain Marvel; Rune Temte plays Bron-Char, and Algenis Perez Soto plays Att-Lass, who are both members of the Starforce. And, finally, there’s Goose the cat. Goose is probably the best actor out of all of them, I’d say.
Now, there’s another thing I wanna do . . . something big. I’m gonna rank all twenty-one MCU films!
I haven’t done this since Black Panther released, and that was on my old website, so I’m going to rank all of the films on this website. I’ll give a little bit of the cast, crew, reviews, the release date, and a smaller plot. For me, it’s hard to write a “smaller” plot instead of a big one, so I’ll do my best! By the way, the Marvel movies that I’ve seen are Iron Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Ant-Man and the Wasp, so I haven’t seen all of them. The ones that I haven’t seen, though, will just go by my opinion anyway because I’ve read what happens in the film, but I’ll have a little help from what the critics have said, too. 😉 Okay, here we go, lights, camera, action!

Well, there was my ranking for you. It was really hard, because there were some that I really wanted to make the top ten, but the others were just better. Please tell me what your ranking is down in the comments section, because I really want to know! Maybe I’ll even include your ranking in an upcoming post! 😉
There’s one more thing I want to do before I go, which is to show images of the Captain Marvel characters so you have a character guide if you want to go see the movie!
And there’s my post. A very long one, too! 5595 words. Now 5597 words. Now 5599. Okay, Whiz Kid, stop! There’s one more thing I want to mention, though. I totally forgot to talk about the awesome CGI in this film! They digitally de-aged Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg to make them look like what they would’ve in the 1990s, because this film is set in 1995. Here’s a photo of Sam Jackson in 1995 vs. what he looks like in the movie.
Pretty crazy, huh? Well, as always, please leave a comment down below on your ranking of the MCU films, and check out my YouTube channel Whiz Kid Reviews. See you guys next time!
What a great post, WK!! I liked reading all the plots you wrote and seeing how you ranked all the MCU films. Wish I could chime in on my opinion on your ranking but I don’t have one! Because, as you know, I’ve never watched any of those films before. But I trust your judgment, therefore I agree with you that Avengers: Infinity War should be number one!! I hope we’ll see some polls in an upcoming post. I always love your polls. I’m glad you’re feeling better from the flu and I look forward to your next post as always! 🙂
Nice work WK! I agree with most of your rankings of the Marvel movies. Here are my TOP 5:
5. Ironman – The one that launched the franchise in my opinion. RDJ was cast perfectly as Tony Stark.
4. Thor: Ragnarok – I’ve really come to enjoy Chris Hemsworth as Thor. He plays the role with a lot of humor and doesn’t take himself too seriously. This is the best Thor movie and has a very Guardians feel to it.
3. Spider-man: Homecoming – Love the casting of Tom Holland as Peter Parker. Very believable as a high school student and plays the role perfectly. Fun movie.
2. Avengers: Infinity War – The most serious of the Marvel movies. It brings all of our Superheros together for the first time to try and stop Thanos. Still has several moments of the Marvel humor I enjoy so much, but is much heavier than the rest of the movies. This one was a very close second to my favorite Marvel movie…
1. Guardians of the Galaxy – Still remains #1 on my list! I just love this movie. A ton of humor throughout and spot on casting. From Chris Pratt to Dave Bautista and everyone in between, it’s perfect! We’ll have to wait and see if Avengers: Endgame can unseat it.
WONDERFUL!!! Now I am excited to see this movie tomorrow. Good job! So much detail, how do you do it?
Great post! Though I must object with how high you ranked the Ant-Man movies… ahead of Age of Ultron?! Blasphemy! 😉 What I came here to say, though, was that I saw Captain Marvel yesterday and loved it! You’ll have to let me know what you think once you’re able to see it. I think it’ll tie in great to End Game, which is my personal most-anticipated movie of 2019.
Loving the look of the website! Miss you kiddo 🙂
